You've also developed a cool looking profit grabbing website,
ready to receive any form of electronic payment. You've also
spent a fortune on advertising online and you're getting a lot of
clicks but the most important thing is not happening - no one is
buying on your website.
This is the part most people give up at. It's also the part that
makes me most upset because they've done most of the work.
When you're getting a lot of traffic to your website but are not
getting any sales, this can only mean 3 things:
1. There's not enough traffic as you think
2. You're getting useless traffic
3. Your website sucks
Let's go through these 3 possibilities.
1. There's not enough traffic as you think
Have you ever asked yourself that you may not be getting that
much traffic to your website to justify a sale. Normally the
success of a website is measured by its conversion rate. Whether
by its opt in conversion rate or sales conversion rate.
Conversion rates are normally measured in the hundreds. For
example, if you have 100 visitors and only 3 sign up for your
newsletter, then the opt in rate is 3%. If you have 100 visitors
and 2 bought your products then the sales conversion rate is 2%.
Therefore before you start to think that you are getting no
response from your traffic, ask yourself are you getting enough
traffic in the first place to justify that your website is not
doing its work? I would say that if you get around 200 visitors
and non of them take any action on your website such as signing
up to your list or, clicking on an ad in adsense, then you can
start to worry. But then of course it depends on what you are
selling. If you are selling real estate and get one sale with
every 300 visitors then you're doing really good.
There are many tools that you can use to check what visitors are
doing on your website and where they come from. The one which I
use can be found at http://www.onlinemoneymachine.com/tracker
My traffic are tracked using this software so that I know which
source my traffic comes from and which source provides the best
visitors. The best visitors are the ones which sign up to my
newsletter and buy from my website of course.
2. You're getting useless traffic
Let's say that you do get loads of traffic. Probably in the
thousands and you still have no sales, then one of two things
could be the reason. One of the them is, you're getting useless
traffic. Useless traffic is when a visitor accidentally stumbles
onto your website and have no interest in reading it. Therefore
their natural reaction is to close the window or to look at
another site. They won't even remember the name of your website.
This type of traffic can be found in traffic exchange programs.
This is where you look at other people's websites so that you get
credit for your websites which can in turn be viewed by other
people. Think about this. The reason why you are viewing other
people's websites is to get credit so that your website is
getting viewed. Therefore you are ignoring the websites you are
looking at. Guess what? That's what others are doing when they
look at your website - totally ignoring it. The sole purpose is
to view as many websites as possible to get credits. Needless to
say even with thousands of visitors, you won't get any sales.
Various forms of these "rubbish traffic" exists and it is quite
amazing that people still buy from them. "Guaranteed 100,000
visitors to your website", "100,000 popups", "website rotation on
ads", etc. Remember, the visitor that sees your website, should
have an interest on what your website has to offer. For example a
person visiting a street full of Chinese Restaurants will want to
eat Chinese food. That is why they are there. This is called
targeted traffic. This is the sort of traffic you should be
aiming to get. 100 targeted traffic is miles better than 1000
rubbish visitors.
Good ways to get targeted traffic are via Google's AdWords or
other well known PPC search engines such as Overture.
Another good way to get targeted traffic is to write articles.
When people read them they will see your resource box at the
bottom and they will be interested to see what your website is
about. Guess what I'm doing now?
3. Your website sales page sucks
The second reason why you're getting loads of traffic and no
response on your website, is probably because your website sucks.
So what do I mean by a "sucky" website?
A website that is poorly designed is a bad website and it puts
visitors off. If I visited a website and it looks as though some
10 year old kid designed it and I haven't the foggiest idea what
the website is about, then I'm going to leave. There's too many
websites out there so anything which does not hold my interest,
I'm off somewhere else. Same with everyone.
One of the techniques, which you should implement on your website
is a form for people to sign up so that they are on your email
list. That way, when they leave your website, you can still sell
to them or contact them after weeks or months. All good websites
have what they call an "opt in form". If you haven't got one, get
one developed quick. You're losing sales.
